An interactive CD-ROM

Customer

TNO is a knowledge institute who applies scientific knowledge with the aim of strengthening the innovative power of industry and government. Their core areas are: quality of life; defense, security and safety; science and industry; built environment and geosciences; information and communication technology.

Realization

2006

Situation

The Service Point of Occupational and Adult Education (BVE) supports institutes to reduce absence through illness and decrease the workload. Teachers of Higher Vocational Education experience more and more stress. That is why TNO was asked to develop a product used by school management and teachers to deal with stress at work. Already existing information of stress in Higher Vocational Education has to be accessible in this product. Therefore TNO developed a concept of an interactive CD-ROM with a management game for school managements.

Objective

The technical realization (both development and design) of the interactive CD-ROM, in association with TNO and the Serivce Point Occupational Education and Adult Education.

Result

Proteon developed a complete independent working and interactive CD-ROM with the use of available information. The content exists of four parts: introduction, Quickscan, a incident game and information. With the help of the Quickscan you obtain a quick view of the working conditions policy in an organization. The incident game contains cases with examples of stressful situations in case of absence, workload and reintegration. To support the game a calculation model about absence costs, developed by TNO, and relevant information, developed by BVE, were submitted to the CD-ROM. Everything is developed with the following technologies: OpenCMS, Javascript and Ajax technology.

The application content has been input by TNO to a web based Content Management System. Because of this TNO is able to modify online the content and to observe the results during the project. Proteon has made a CD-ROM whereby the content is inserted by the Content Management System. For this they used a OpenCMS Content Management System, for the interactivity of the CD-ROM the advanced technology Javascript, related to Ajax technology, was used.

Conclusion

Proteon developed an effictive product in a creative way. In many cases OpenCMS is only used for websites, but Proteon was able to use it in such a way that it was possible to develop an interactive CD-ROM. During the development of the CD-ROM, it was possible to add and test cases. That is how the game was made in a flexible and simultaneous way, which resulted in a successful CD-ROM and a satisfied customer.

A customer's reaction

Nico Louwrier, employee of TNO: "What we like is that Proteon is a business-like and at the same time personal company. Often the customer and the contractor do not speak the same language, but Proteon is able to translate the wishes of the customer in a working issue. Also customers often have in mind something which is technical impracticable. Proteon knows to find a technical realistic solution of this. I am also glad with the lay out of the CD-ROM. And it is my personal opinion, but I like the modern design developed by Proteon Design. The CD-ROM was received with open arms; we heard positive reactions from both customers and people of the educational sector. And not forgetting, schools are actually getting to work with the CD-ROM!"
